Shimla, March 16
Hundreds of passengers were stranded as vehicular traffic to Shimla from Chandigarh came to a grinding halt as the highway was sealed by police in view of the protest planned by the activists of Devbhumi Kshatriya Sangathan and Swaran Samaj.
The police and district administration have issued an alert regarding the proposed protest, asking people to avoid unnecessary travel in the town on the Shimla-Chandigarh National Highway. Traffic queues of vehicles as long as 10 km were seen.
Shimla Deputy Commissioner Aditya Negi has imposed Section 144 at nine places in Shimla on Wednesday in view of a ‘chakka jam’ (traffic blockade) planned by the activists.
A complete ban on demonstrations, sloganeering, processions, playing bands, etc, to be observed near Himachal Secretariat in Chhota Shimla, Governor’s residence Raj Bhavan, Himachal Pradesh High Court, the CM’s residence Oakover, MLA Hostel, Tutikandi parking on the Shimla-Chandigarh National Highway, Victory Tunnel, 103 Tunnel, AG Chowk, Nigam Vihar and Dhalli Bazaar.
The orders would remain in force all day on March 16. Strict legal action would be taken against those violating the orders, the DC said.
The protest comes days after more than 10,000 government employees demanding restoration of old pension system had choked the state capital with a massive protest.
